Thanksgiving Together: A Time to Reflect, Rejoice, and Give Thanks

November 13, 2024 2:20 PM

Thanksgiving represents the joy of sharing a meal with friends and loved ones, connecting over good food, laughter, and memories. It’s a holiday that encourages us to slow down and appreciate everything we have, gathering together over an abundant meal for all to enjoy. This year, as we busily prepare to slice the turkey or ham, gobble down our favorite stuffing, and indulge in a savory pie, let’s not forget about those who are less fortunate — those struggling financially or dealing with the loss of someone dear who won’t be present at the table this year.

Here are three Bible verses that will inspire us all to embrace a spirit of gratitude this Thanksgiving and remind us of the central role Jesus plays in it:

1. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 — “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

This verse reminds us that gratitude is a year-round attitude we can carry into and beyond the Thanksgiving season. By focusing on Jesus’ sacrifice and love, we, as believers, can face life’s ups and downs, knowing that His grace, mercy, and the gift of eternal life are present through every season of our lives.

2. Psalm 100:4 — “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.”

As we gather — whether in homes or places of worship — let’s enter these spaces with thankful hearts, celebrating our Heavenly Father’s enduring love and faithfulness. Let’s remember Jesus’ role in bringing us into God’s presence, where we can experience the fullness of joy, unity, and hope for the future.

3. Colossians 3:15 — “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

This verse calls us to let peace and gratitude be the foundation of all our interactions, reminding us that thankfulness and the peace of Jesus tie us together, regardless of one’s political views, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or background.

As we prepare for Thanksgiving, let’s challenge ourselves to embody these scriptures. Take a moment each day to acknowledge something you’re grateful for—whether it’s a smile from a stranger, the comfort of friends and family, or the peace that comes from knowing you’re part of a greater community.

I encourage you to extend your Thanksgiving table by inviting someone to share your meal and gratitude with you and your loved ones. Reach out to someone who might be feeling lonely, anxious, or sad this season. Let’s come together with grateful hearts, and may this Thanksgiving be a reminder of the blessings we share and the community we build together, looking to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith!
