How to Live with Confidence in an Uncertain World

Where do you place your confidence when the things you thought were dependable begin to change? In today’s world, we live with more uncertainty than we sometimes realize. Circumstances seem to change instantaneously. Culture shifts. Institutions fail. Relationships enter new seasons. Even things that have been around for years can suddenly look very different. That uncertainty can leave us searching for something solid. And if we’re not careful, what’s shifting around us can begin to shake something within us too.

But the Bible never promises that everything around us will remain stable. Instead, God points us toward something greater: His Kingdom cannot be shaken. As such, we need to listen to His voice. In Hebrews 12:25–28, God spoke to Israel at Mount Sinai and warned them not to turn away from His voice. Now God doesn’t speak to us from a mountain, He speaks through His Son, who is the Word of God. We are called to listen to Him. We should expect that everything in this world that we’ve become accustomed to or put our hope in will one day be shaken and pass away, but only God’s Kingdom will remain.

As believers, our confidence doesn’t come from knowing what will happen next. It comes from knowing who God is, trusting what He has said, and remembering that Jesus is still King.

1. Trust God’s Voice and His Word

When life feels uncertain, it’s easy to listen to whatever voice is loudest. Our emotions, other people’s opinions, and everything happening around us can quickly take over our thoughts. But God’s Word reminds us to listen to God. His voice is the one that can steady us when everything else feels shaky and uncertain.

In Matthew 24:35, Jesus tells us that heaven and earth will pass away, but His words will remain. Numbers 23:19 tells us that God does not lie or change His mind. So, when we don’t know what tomorrow will bring, we can still stand on what God has already said because He is Truth and we can trust what He says.

2. Put Your Confidence in What Cannot Be Shaken

We often don’t realize how much we depend on something until it no longer feels secure. It’s like when an earthquake hits. We rarely question the ground beneath our feet because we expect it to be steady. But the moment it starts moving, we realize that even something we counted on can shift. Life can feel that way too. Things we thought were secure can change without warning.

But God doesn’t change. In Malachi 3:6, He says, “I the Lord do not change.” His character and faithfulness remain the same no matter what is happening around us. We see that security in Jesus too. His resurrection proved that even death could not defeat Him. All authority belongs to Him (Matthew 28:18), so even when life feels uncertain, our King and His Kingdom remain secure.

3. Live Like You Belong to an Unshakable Kingdom

So, how should knowing all of this change the way we live? Psalm 46:1–3 gives us a beautiful picture. The earth is giving way, the mountains are falling, and the waters are roaring, yet the psalmist begins with what he knows to be true: “God is our refuge and strength.”

We can begin there too. When the world is fearful, we can remain hopeful. When anger is everywhere, we can choose love. When people are divided, we can pursue unity. We may not understand everything happening around us, but we know who God is. And knowing who He is gives us somewhere solid to stand.

This week, identify one area where uncertainty has been shaking your confidence. Read Hebrews 12:25–28 and Psalm 46:1–3, and bring that situation to God. Ask yourself what you have been listening to and where you have been placing your confidence.

Then come back to what you know is true. God does not change. His Word will not fail. Jesus is still King. His Kingdom cannot be shaken, so stand firm, and be confident in today’s uncertain world. God’s got you.
