Hope that Outlasts Circumstances: Trusting God in Uncertain Times

optimizing

What happens to your hope when life doesn’t turn out the way you expected? Maybe you’re hoping for better days, a stronger family, a better community, or a brighter future. It’s natural to hope things will get better, but when your hope rests on circumstances changing, it can rise and fall with everything happening around you.

That’s why what you focus your attention on is so important. If all you see is what’s wrong, you can begin to believe nothing can be right. If all you see is what’s changing, you can start to feel like nothing is secure. Your circumstances can inform you, but they don’t have to define your hope. When your hope is anchored in God’s character and promises, you can face an uncertain future knowing He remains faithful regardless of life’s ups and downs.

Key Takeaways

Here are three ways you can hold on to hope that outlasts your circumstances.

1. Anchor Your Hope in God

Hebrews 6:19 says, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” An anchor doesn’t stop the storm, but it keeps the ship from being carried away. You can cry, grieve, feel disappointed, or have unanswered questions and still have hope. You may not understand what is happening, but you can still trust God.

2. Keep Trusting God While You Wait

In Jeremiah 29:4-7, God told the Israelites living in captivity to build homes, plant gardens, raise families, and pray for their city. Their circumstances were unfavorable, but God didn’t tell them to put their lives on hold. You don’t have to put your life on hold either. You can keep living, serving, loving, praying, and trusting God while you wait. Hope allows you to live faithfully today because you trust God with tomorrow.

3. Let Your Hope Overflow

Romans 15:13 says we can, as believers, “overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” Our hope is meant to overflow to others. For example, when someone around you is discouraged, your hope can encourage them. And when they can only see what is happening in front of them, your hope can remind them that God is still at work in ways they cannot see.

That’s the difference between being a thermometer and a thermostat. A thermometer simply reflects the temperature around it, while a thermostat influences the environment. Instead of reflecting the discouragement and uncertainty around you, you can influence the atmosphere with the hope God has given you.

Take a moment to think about what has your attention right now. Is uncertainty pulling your focus toward everything that could go wrong, or are you keeping your focus on who God is and what He has promised? This week, when your thoughts turn to uncertain circumstances and you start to worry, turn your attention back to God. You may not know what tomorrow will bring, but you can live faithfully today because you belong to the one with all authority over every circumstance, and He holds you in the palm of His hand!
